A new base version of the Mahindra Thar is reportedly in the works, and it will be powered by a 1.5-liter diesel engine. Mahindra’s second-generation Thar has been a runaway success, with demand significantly outstripping supply for months.
Mahindra seems to be hoping to cash in on the Thar’s success, and is said to be working on a new, more affordable version of the compact off-roader. This latest Mahindra Thar base model is expected to be equipped with a 1.5-liter diesel engine and will be offered with both manual and automatic gearbox options.
However, the new base version would not have 4-wheel drive, and as a result of this and other updates, the new entry-level variant could be about 100 kg lighter than the 4-wheel drive variants. Mahindra isn’t expected to make any changes to the SUV’s design, but the Mahindra Thar base model will have smaller wheels.
The new version is expected to be more fuel efficient than the current model due to the smaller engine and reduced weight. The new base version would, of course, be less expensive than the existing entry-level AX(O) variant, which costs Rs. 12.11 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi).
